24 Hour Readathon

fZpil.jpg

Yesterday, in a fit of optimism and/or insanity, I signed up for the 24-hour readathon that suddenly took over my twitter feed.

I have no illusions that I'll make it all the way through. My flu ridden state has guaranteed not only a copious amount of phlegm, but occasional bouts of narcolepsy.

That said, I intend to approach the challenge in the spirit intended, and am looking forward to celebrating/commiserating with my fellow participants. (It''s not too late to join, if you're a masochistic book lover like me!)

The plan is loose, but here's what I have on my options list:

  • The Marriage Plot, by Jeffrey Eugenides
  • The Moviegoer, by Walker Percy
  • Knife of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness
  • Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov
  • A Life in Movies, by Roger Ebert
  • Blackout, by Connie Willis
  • The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson

Others may worm their way in, especially short stories, but lets see how we get on!

1) Where are you reading from today?

In my bed in my flat in my tall, tall building off a road in central London.

2) Three random facts about me…

a) I am making myself immune to colds and vampires...

3) How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?

7 to start off with, more to come.

4) Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

Nope. Just wanna take over the world, as usual.

  18. Let me know how The Marriage Plot is. I read Middlesex by the same author and really liked it.

  19. Oh I still haven't read The Knife of Never Letting Go, I probably should have added it to my list too. Happy reading! :D

  20. I've been meaning to read The Haunting of Hill House for FOREVER. I really like the 1999 movie (despite its cheesiness), so I'm assuming I'd like the book, too. Happy readathon! I hope you feel better.

  21. A fantastic list of books.  I want to read Lolita but have not yet gotten to it.  Enjoy your reading. Remember to take frequent breaks and drink lots of fluids. Happy readathon.

  22. Thanks I will! I consider Lolita the biggest hole in my reading, so I'm hoping to fill that one in :). Am clutching a cup of tea as we speak!

  23. I have as well! I love the 1999 film, but the old movie is even better, you should check it out!

Nice picks! The Haunting of Hill House is a pretty good read and The Knife of Never Letting Go sounds really good.

Hope you feel better and are able to get some reading in. =)

  30. Sounds like a fun day of reading. I'm your cheerleader:) Rah Rah Rah! Go Go Go! You can do it!

  31. Ugh, hope you feel better soon! You have an amazing stack of books to choose from (and hopefully distract you from your illness). Have a fun readathon!

  32. I want to echo what theoncominghope said.  You have to see the original 1963 movie.  It is one of the most suspenseful movies ever made and much better than the remake.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks, I will!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I laughed when I read the taking over the world plot. I think that's awesome! Happy reading :)

  35. Hope you're feeling better soon.  So brave to take part in the readathon when you aren't feeling well.  But nothing is more soothing than a good book.

  36. What better way to spend an afternoon sick than reading?!? Good luck with your reading. I've heard great things about The Marriage Plot!

  37. Hope you are feeling better!  The Knife of Never Letting Go is a fantastic book.

  38. Bah. No fun to be sick for a read-a-thon. Unless it translates into more reading hours. You might need to add some more books to your stack to keep the book stack higher than the stack of used-tissues....but you've sure got some good ones there already. Take care!

(I'm cheering for you from Team Trix!)

  39. By some quirk of fate, my reading mountain managed to defeat the used tissue mountain!

  40. Thanks! I hope to have a review up today or tomorrow :)

  41. RAH RAH ... sleep.

  42. Hope you enjoyed your readathon and hope it helped pass the time while you're ill.  And that immune to vampires thing is a bonus.  Thanks for stopping by my blog to cheer me on.

  43. I'm about 100 pages into The Marriage Plot, and I would recommend it so far -- if you don't get around to it on your Read-a-thon, you should pick it up afterward.
